As we know, one of the functions of katakana is to indicate foreign words. Japanese has lots of them from different countries, however sometimes their interpretations are not always accurate
１。バイキング
Baikingu or Viking, means a buffet style eating. However, the original meaning of Vikings as Norse seafarers is very far from a dining experience. This word came to take meaning in Japan because of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo in 1958 used the name "viking" as their restaurant style because this was based on a scene from the movie "Viking" that shows a grand feast. From there, the name stuck to represent buffet style eating
２。マンション
manshon that is derived from the word mansion is not a lavish luxury house. Instead it is a Japanese condominium apartment.
3.アルバイト
Arubaito is a German word used for work. In the past is was an intellectual word only used among college students during the Meiji period, but then it spread to the public and is widely used until today.
